Puget Sound Orcas To Remain on Endagered List

A POD of killer whales has been spotted near Scarborough this morning.
Perth fisherman Craig Stock and friend Nathan Greig were fishing about 1km off the coast when they saw the whales.
Mr Stock told sharkalarm.com.au they saw five killer whales about 50m from their boat "slowly moving towards us".
He said they stayed near the boat for a few minutes before swimming south.
"They were really close to shore and there were people in the water," he said.
"It's lucky they weren't any closer to shore or they would have attacked a surfer.
"We didn't get any fish after they left because they scared everything away."
Department of Environment and Conservation senior wildlife officer Doug Coughran confirmed the sighting, saying it was very rare for killer whales to be spotted so close to shore.
"They're normally at the west end of Rottnest," he said.
Mr Coughran told PerthNow the killer whales followed the humpback whale migration.
"The reason that they are probably in close is that there is a large number of humpback mothers and calves in that area between Rottnest Island, Fremantle and Hillarys that are in there resting at present on their southern run on the migration," he said.
"Killer whales are an apex predator on humpbacks and the calves in particular. There's been the odd observation of killer whales taking calves off Ningaloo Reef over the years and I think as time goes on it will be a more regular observation."
Mr Coughran said there were no recorded incidents of killer whales attacking humans in the wild.
"They are a top-line predator and people should accept that fact," he said.
"It's illegal to swim with them anyway."
Killer whales, or orcas, have a distinctive black-and-white pattern, are highly social and don't have any natural predators. Males can reach 8m in length.
